Selling to Your List the Right Way

How To Sell To Your List In The Right Way

A few years ago it was possible to send out emails to subscribers that were totally biased towards making a sale, and have a degree of success with this. At that time people did not subscribe to many lists, and it was an acceptable way to announce a new product or sell an existing one.

This doesn’t work well any more. People that are on your list are likely to be subscribed to many other lists. When a new product comes out they are likely to receive the same emails from different people trying to sell it to them. This is lazy email marketing, and it just doesn’t work.

Does this mean that email marketing is dead? No it doesn’t, but a different approach is required to make the sale. Flat out blatant sales pitches are being ignored, and it is highly recommended that you stay away from these kinds of emails.

For marketers that have a really large list, and have been around for years, this approach might still work. It is highly unlikely that it will work for you if you are fairly new to email marketing.

People do not like being sold to. In the old days there wasn’t much choice, and they were unlikely to hear about a new product unless they received an email about it. Now they receive dozens of emails about new products that are all written in the same way. Their guard against purchasing anything will be raised immediately.

Use A Linked, Soft Sell Approach

In order to have your emails opened these days you need to be different. A lot of people will only open a few emails each day, and you need to be sure that yours is one of them. If you resort to these boiler plate sales tactic emails, then you can lose a large proportion of your list with just one email.

If you have been sending quality emails, and then suddenly resort to a blatant sales pitch because you are desperate to make some money, you will severely disappoint your loyal subscribers. It could literally mean that they will never open your emails again, and it will certainly lead to some unsubscribes.

Most marketers know that this sales email approach doesn’t work, but they don’t know what else to do so they persevere with it regardless. You do not need to do this. If a new product is coming out about email marketing, and you think that it is quality and you want to promote it, then write an email about an email marketing problem and how you solved it.

Describe the problem and exactly what you did to solve it. Make the solution look involved and requiring a lot of effort. You can then tell your subscribers how the new product solved the problem in a fraction of the time etc.

Avoid Hype At All Costs

Remember that this is a soft selling approach and you are recommending something rather than selling it. Avoid hyped up phrases such as “you must get this now before it’s too late”. Just provide them with an opportunity to watch a video or read more about the product by using a link in your email.

If there are bonuses for early purchasers or a time limit on the launch then tell them about that too, but don’t overdo it. This technique works well, but you have to be consistent with your emails. If you provide value and the subscriber learns from you then they will trust you. If someone that you trusted recommended something, you would be likely to check it out wouldn’t you?
